Wave
Marsh Harbor, Bahamas.
An integrated design studio led by Balli Trautman Architects founder, David Trautman.
An established landmark that serves both, tourism, and locals in the heart of Marsh Harbor. The Wave aims to fill the gap between luxury and the original comfort of the island.
The design, nature, and architecture of the project fully rely on where it is being built. The Wave is suited to the island’s climate, which is subject to unseen natural disasters such as tropical storms, which include flooding and sea level rise. For the most part, it offers recreational and educational opportunities, it’s all purpose is to provide a resilient space, becoming a home to many in times of need.
It is a building with a function that aggregates and binds. The free-form design is inspired by the ocean waves. The curves become an expression of structural continuity. Sustainability becomes a major factor which includes shutters, overhangs, big and volume ceilings that allow hot air to rise, and rainwater recollection.
The Wave not only distinguishes itself physically but because of its purpose and intention from the rest of the island’s establishments. It is architecture proper.
The structure adopts the content and different programs. Entering the elevated site, one encounters a generous yet energy efficient garden, where rainwater from both, the roof and soil, is harvested and stored in a large cistern, that recycles gray water for irrigation and services. By the garden, there is also an open-air amphitheater, that allows for rainwater recollection in case of emergency.
